CO2 cartridges can be used for various different things such as airsoft pistols, carbonating soda drinks or inflating bicycle tires.

They are a relatively simple contraption, which is metal filled with CO2. This makes them easier to recycle as they normally don't have any additional parts or plastics around them.

When handling CO2 cartridges safety comes first. Here are a few things to bear in mind:

  • Do not try and crush or incinerate the cartridges
  • Do not expose unused Co2 cartridges to hot temperatures.
  • Keep them away from children
  • Do not consume the contents of a Co2 cartridge.

Are CO2 cartridges recyclable?

The CO2 cartridges themselves are made solely of metal and therefore are fully recyclable. You will need to ensure that the cartridges are empty. You must not put full or not fully used CO2 cartridges in the recycling, as they are prone to explode if not kept or cared for in the correct manner.

Where to recycle CO2 cartridges

Empty CO2 cartridges can be recycled at most recycling centres or scrap yards. Make sure to check the location you are thinking of taking them to have the capacity to recycle metals first.

How to dispose of unused CO2 cartridges

Rather than disposing of your unused CO2 cartridges, you should look to pass them on to get fully used first. Try offering them too someone you know or advertising them online.

You can list them on:

  • Facebook Marketplace
  • eBay
  • Craigslist
  • Gumtree

If you have a large quantity of them, you could even list them on popular airsoft forums to see if anyone would like to purchase them off of you.

To conclude used CO2 cartridges are simple to dispose of via recycling centres. However if your cartridge has CO2 left inside you must use it up first, either yourself or pass it onto someone else to use up before disposing of it.
